SOAH's Black and Chrome Edition shower heads use a three-stage cartridge: a vitamin C (ascorbic acid) stage for chlorine reduction, an antibacterial ceramic ball stage for rust and heavy metal filtering, and a microfiber stage for fine sediment. Each stage targets a distinct part of what's actually in UAE tap water, rather than one generic "filter everything" claim.
Stage 1: Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid)
The primary chlorine-reduction stage. Ascorbic acid is a chemical reducing agent, it reacts directly with chlorine and chloramine molecules, converting them into harmless chloride, a reaction that happens within seconds and works consistently across the full range of shower water temperatures. This is a well-documented water-treatment chemistry mechanism, distinct from adsorption-based media like activated carbon or electrochemical media like KDF, covered in full in our filtration glossary. Each cartridge carries one of three scents (lemon, lavender/tea tree, or green muscat), released gradually through the shower.
Stage 2: Antibacterial Ceramic Balls
Designed to filter rust and heavy metal traces and inhibit bacterial buildup within the cartridge itself over its service life. Ceramic media is a widely used water-treatment material for this purpose across the broader filtration industry, not a SOAH-proprietary invention.
Stage 3: Microfiber
The final, physical filtration stage, catching fine sediment and sand particles that can be present in UAE municipal and building tank water, before water reaches the spray plate.
Why Three Stages, Not One
Chlorine, heavy metals/rust, and sediment are three chemically and physically distinct things in water, and no single mechanism addresses all three. A cartridge built around only one stage, most commonly sediment-only in low-cost competitors, misses the other two entirely, a gap we've written about directly in our breakdown of cheap filter mechanisms. SOAH's three-stage design is built to address all three categories rather than one.
Replacement Cycle
All three stages are replaced together every 8 weeks, sold as the Vitamin C Filter Trio (a 3-pack covering roughly 6 months). The cartridge changing colour or the scent fading are the practical signals it's time to replace, alongside the 8-week guideline.
We do not currently hold independent third-party certification (such as NSF/ANSI 177) verifying an exact chlorine-reduction percentage for the finished cartridge, and we say so directly rather than publishing an unverified number. The ascorbic acid reduction mechanism itself is well-documented general water-treatment chemistry; what we have not had independently tested is our own specific cartridge's performance at scale.
