Replacement shower filter cartridges arranged side by side, illustrating long-term ownership costs.

Shower Filter Cartridge Costs Compared: blu, Philips, SOAH and Generics Over 3 Years

The sticker price of a shower filter is the smallest number in the decision. Over three years, most households spend more on cartridges than on the unit, and the most common four-star review across every brand in the UAE says some version of "great, but the refills are expensive." Here's the cartridge maths for the brands people actually buy here, with our own numbers included and no rounding in our favour.

Short Answer

KNOWN: Cartridge cost is driven by three numbers: refill price, stated interval, and how many showers your household actually takes. The stated interval is a manufacturer figure; heavy use, sediment-rich buildings and strong chlorine days all shorten it.
KNOWN: Across the mainstream UAE options, three-year running costs land within a fairly narrow band, roughly AED 600 to 1,000 for a single-person household, with generics much cheaper and premium in-line units in the middle.
UNPROVEN: Whether a more expensive cartridge removes more chlorine. No independent side-by-side test exists for UAE water; price tracks brand and format more than proven performance.

The Three Numbers That Matter

Variable Why it matters What moves it
Refill price The obvious one Multi-packs and subscriptions lower per-unit cost; promotions on Amazon.ae can cut 20-30%
Stated interval or capacity Determines how many refills a year Manufacturer's assumption of litres per day; check whether it's stated in months or litres
Your actual use A couple showering twice daily uses roughly four times the water of one person showering once Household size, gym habits, hair-wash frequency, building sediment load

Most brands quote intervals for a single person or a light-use household. If four of you share a bathroom, halve the interval before doing any maths.

Three-Year Cost, Brand by Brand

Assumptions: one bathroom, single-person to couple usage, cartridges changed at the maker's stated interval, UAE prices as visible in September 2026. Check current prices before deciding; they move.

Product Unit Refill Stated interval Refills over 3 years Approx. 3-year total
SOAH Vitamin C Shower Head AED 399.99 AED 149.99 per 3-pack (about AED 50 each); 10% less on Subscribe & Save About 8 weeks About 18-19 cartridges (6-7 packs, first cartridge included) About AED 1,300 at list, roughly AED 1,200 on subscription
blu filtered shower head About AED 399 Roughly AED 139-199 depending on pack, per blu's site when last checked About 3-4 months About 9-11 Roughly AED 1,600-2,400 depending on refill pack chosen
Philips AWP1775 in-line About AED 139-149 About AED 70-90 50,000 L, 4-6 months; UAE users report ~4 About 8-9 Roughly AED 700-950
H2O Pure Blue / Blue Oasis type multi-stage head Roughly AED 150-300 Roughly AED 60-120 Usually stated 3-6 months About 6-12 Roughly AED 600-1,500; wide range
Generic clear-body "Korean" sediment cartridge AED 30-80 AED 10-25 each, often in 5-packs Weeks; clogs fast in older buildings 20-40 Roughly AED 300-800, for sediment only, not chlorine

All competitor figures from public listings and brand sites at time of writing, not verified purchases. SOAH figures from our own store. Promotions, pack sizes and intervals change; treat this as a method, not a quote.

What the Table Actually Says

Reading It Honestly

SOAH is not the cheapest to run. Our 8-week interval means more cartridges than a KDF in-line unit. The per-cartridge price is low, the count is high. Over three years we land above Philips and roughly level with or below blu depending on which blu refill pack you buy.

Philips is the value benchmark for chlorine reduction in the UAE. Cheap unit, long interval, refills often on promotion. If running cost is your first criterion and you're happy with the in-line format, that's the answer, see SOAH vs Philips.

blu's cost depends heavily on the refill pack and its interval is longer than ours, so despite a higher per-refill price the totals overlap with SOAH's.

Generics look cheap and often aren't once you account for how fast they clog, and they mostly aren't chlorine filters anyway, see do cheap shower filters actually remove chlorine.

Why We Chose a Short Interval Anyway

Ascorbic acid is consumed as it neutralises chlorine. A cartridge that lasts six months either contains a very large amount of it or has stopped doing much by month three. We'd rather you change a smaller cartridge more often and know it's fresh. That's a design trade-off, not a virtue; it costs you more over three years than an in-line KDF unit would. If you'd rather change something twice a year, we've said which product does that.

How to Cut Your Own Running Cost

Whatever Brand You Own

✔ Buy refills in multi-packs or on subscription; the per-unit difference is usually 10-30%.
✔ Change on evidence, not just calendar. A chlorine test strip before and after the head tells you when a cartridge has actually stopped working, see the 30-day test. In a low-chlorine building you may get longer than the stated interval; in a sediment-heavy one, shorter.
✔ Fix the building problem if cartridges clog in weeks. That's a tank issue, see brown water: who to call.
✔ Shorter showers extend any cartridge, and are better for your skin anyway.
✔ Stock up on promotions; several Reddit users buy Philips refills only on sale.

What We Could Not Verify

Competitor prices and intervals are as publicly listed and were not confirmed by purchase. Actual cartridge life varies with household use and building water and no brand's interval has been independently tested on UAE water. We have a commercial interest and have shown our own product as more expensive to run than the value benchmark because that's what the numbers say.

Question Honest answer
Cheapest to run for chlorine reduction? Philips in-line, on current UAE pricing.
Where does SOAH sit? Mid to upper: short interval, cheap cartridge, roughly AED 1,200-1,300 over three years.
Biggest lever on cost? Household size and shower count, then multi-packs and promotions.
Should I change on the calendar? Use it as a maximum; a test strip tells you the real answer.

FAQs

Why does SOAH need changing every 8 weeks?

Because vitamin C is used up as it works. A fresh cartridge every two months is the point of the design; a six-month vitamin C cartridge would be mostly spent for half its life.

Can I make cartridges last longer?

Shorter showers and fewer of them, yes. Rinsing or drying a spent cartridge doesn't restore chlorine capacity for any media type.

Are third-party refills safe to use?

For proprietary heads, compatibility and contents are uncertain and you lose any warranty. For standard in-line housings, generic cartridges exist; check the media and the litre rating.

Final Thoughts

Run the three-year number before you buy, with your real household size. Philips wins on cost. SOAH costs more to run and we've said why. blu depends on the pack. Generics aren't in the same race. Then choose the format you'll actually keep changing, because an unchanged cartridge is the most expensive kind.
